Police Kill Two Armed Robbers in Shootout on Atebubu-Yeji Highway

Atebubu: An exchange of bullets between the police and a group of armed robbers on the Atebubu-Yeji highway in the Bono East Region has left two of the robbers dead.

According to Ghana News Agency, the armed robbers had earlier stormed, attacked, and robbed traders, resulting in the death of one person. A reliable police source disclosed that the robbery attack occurred at Kobre, a community along the stretch, around 8:00 PM on Sunday, July 6, 2025, as traders were returning from the Yeji market to Atebubu.

The police highway patrol team encountered the robbers, leading to the exchange of gunfire. The source stated that one of the robbers managed to escape with a gunshot wound. A robbery victim, who is also a trader, informed the Ghana News Agency on condition of anonymity that the body of 38-year-old Mohammed Suraji Raweisu, known as 'Suker' and a livestock keeper, had been buried following Islamic customs.

The victim described how the armed robbers, lying in ambush, fired sporadic gunshots that struck the deceased, who was seated behind the driver. In response, the driver halted the vehicle and fled into the bush for safety. The robbers then proceeded to steal money, mobile phones, and other valuables from the passengers on the stretch.

Residents of Kobre, upon hearing about the incident, arrived at the scene after the robbers had fled. They transported the body to the mortuary at Yeji Matthias Hospital.
