NCCE Holds Environmental Quiz in Schools in Tema Newtown

Accra: The Tema Metro Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised an inter-schools quiz competition to mark the 2025 World Environment Day. World Environment Day is a United Nations initiative celebrated annually on June 5 to promote action for environmental protection. This year's theme was 'Ending Plastic Pollution.'

According to Ghana News Agency, the quiz competition aimed to raise awareness on the dangers of plastic pollution, promote sustainable waste management behaviours, and instill in young students the principles of the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Mr. Wisdom Aditsey, the Tema Metropolitan Environmental Health Officer, addressed the students, highlighting the significance of World Environment Day and the need for its observance. He noted the impact of environmental activities, such as littering and inefficient recycling, on human lives and stressed the importance of sustainable living.

Madam Gifty Agyeiwaa Badu, the Tema Metro Director of the NCCE, stated that the commission is part of a global campaign to empower children and youth in Ghana as environmental stewards. She emphasized that the 3Rs align with Sustainable Development Goal 6 and the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, focusing on safe water access and sanitation. The theme called for collective action against plastic pollution through the 3Rs.

Madam Gifty Adwoa Mensah, the headmistress of Manhean TMA JHS, emphasized the harmful effects of plastic pollution on health and infrastructure. Following intense competition among five basic schools, Manhean TMA JHS emerged as the winner of the environmental quiz.
