Accra: The people of Mepe in the North Tongu District are set to mark the 69th edition of their annual Afenorto Festival, with the grand durbar scheduled for Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the Mepe Presby JHS Park. This year's celebration is being held under the theme: 'Unite for Peace and Development, post VRA Akosombo-Dam flood disaster.'
According to Ghana News Agency, the festival is organized by the Mepe Development Association (MDA) under the auspices of the Mepe Traditional Council. It seeks to foster reconciliation, peacebuilding, and community revitalization following the impact of the Akosombo Dam spillage that displaced thousands of residents in 2023.
The grand durbar will be the cultural highlight of the celebration, featuring a procession by the five traditional clans of Mepe - Dzagbaku, Adzigo, Sevie, Gbanvie, and Akorvie - led by their Chiefs and Queen Mothers. The display will be accompanied by traditional drumming, dancing, and performances from cultural troupes as they parade through the principal streets of Mepe.
Torgbe Korsi Nego VI, Mankralo of the Mepe Traditional Area, is expected to lead the festival proceedings alongside other traditional leaders, dignitaries, and invited guests from across the country and the diaspora. The Afenorto Festival is one of the prominent cultural events in the Volta Region, providing a platform for reflection, planning, and community engagement.
It also serves as a homecoming for citizens of Mepe and a celebration of the town's heritage, unity, and resilience. The organizers have extended an invitation to the public to join in the celebration and witness the cultural pageantry and spirit of togetherness that define the Afenorto Festival.
