Legon ‘Bush Canteen’ Safe Amidst Fire Rumors

Accra: The University of Ghana's general canteen and market, commonly referred to as the 'Bush Canteen', has not been affected by a fire incident, despite reports in some traditional and social media outlets suggesting otherwise.

According to Ghana News Agency, the confusion arose when a refrigeration mechanic container caught fire within the premises of the Estate Organisation at the University. Upon visiting the Bush Canteen in Legon, it was confirmed that no part of the canteen had been damaged by fire. Instead, the fire was contained to a refrigeration mechanic shop located behind the PDMS Office within the Estate Organisation yard.

A worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, mentioned that although an official report is still pending, an electrical fault is suspected to have ignited the fire, which consumed fridges and other electrical equipment awaiting repair. The Legon Ghana National Fire Tender, stationed nearby, managed to extinguish the flames promptly.

The worker further explained that an explosion of a gas cylinder at the shop initially intensified the fire, but quick action by the Ghana National Fire Service prevented further damage. The timely response was crucial in controlling the situation and ensuring the safety of the Bush Canteen and its surroundings.
