Takoradi: The Jomoro Youth Association, a youth advocacy group, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to appoint Dr George Sipa-Adjah Yankey as the Board Chairman for the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC). It said Dr Yankey’s vast experience in energy infrastructure development, and his deep connection to Nzema made him uniquely qualified to serve in this capacity to propel the growth of the company.
According to Ghana News Agency, the petition was articulated in a statement jointly signed by Mr Desmond Kaku, President, Mr Elvis A. Akroway, General Secretary, and Mr Ehyiman Andoh, Patron of the Association. The statement emphasized that under President Mahama’s leadership, Ghana had been guided by principles of fairness and recognition of contributions from all regions for the country’s collective progress.
The statement highlighted the importance of greater representation of host communities like Nzema in the governance structure of the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC). It suggested that appointing Dr Yankey would mark a significant shift in Ghana’s energy sector, citing his previous leadership roles at Ghana Gas and his extensive experience in governance, finance, and infrastructure development.
Dr Yankey’s expertise in energy infrastructure development was described as an invaluable asset to GNGC. As a native of Nzema, he has been a proponent of development in the Nzema municipalities and the broader area. His appointment would ensure strong advocacy for host communities within GNGC, addressing concerns related to local representation, environmental sustainability, and equitable distribution of benefits from energy projects.
The statement further noted that Dr Yankey’s appointment would inspire confidence among various individuals and traditional leaders, signaling a renewed focus on production, infrastructure development, and industry competitiveness. His understanding of the energy sector and proven track record would drive meaningful reforms and ensure a stable and productive gas industry, aiding in the development of phase two projects.
The association respectfully requested President Mahama to appoint Dr George Sipa-Adjah Yankey as Board Chairman for Ghana Gas, ensuring fair representation for host communities within Nzema in key decision-making processes within GNGC and other energy sector institutions.
