Sana'a: Fighters from the Houthi militia in Yemen have invaded the United Nations compound in the capital Sana'a, according to the UN. 'We can confirm that there has been an unauthorized entry . into the UN compound in Sana'a, which currently accommodates 15 UN international staff members,' the UN statement said.
According to Ghana News Agency, all staff in the compound are safe and accounted for, and have contacted their families. The UN said it was taking 'all necessary measures' and was in contact with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of staff and property.
Yemen has been embroiled in a power struggle since 2014 between government forces, supported by a Saudi Arabia-led alliance, and the Iran-linked Houthi rebels. The Houthis control large areas in the north, including the capital Sana'a.
