Accra: Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, presented the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in Accra. The presentation marks the start of ceremonial visits leading up to this year's annual football match.According to Ghana News Agency, the ceremony took place today in Accra, where Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing and other senior officers accepted the trophy on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong. Rear Admiral Bessing emphasized the initiative's role in fostering national cohesion and assured that the Armed Forces would participate in the upcoming event on 5th September.Rear Admiral Bessing highlighted football's historical role as a unifying tool, noting its potential to ease ethnic tensions in northern Ghana. Mr. Djietror stated that the Democracy Cup is now a regular national event with endorsements from the President, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Chief Justice, symbolizing national unity and development.The seco nd edition of the Democracy Cup, set for 5th September at the University of Ghana Stadium, will feature Accra Hearts of Oak versus Accra Great Olympics. The trophy will be presented to key state institutions, including the Presidency and the Chief Justice, before the match. The Ministry of Defence was the first visit due to last year's postponed presentation to the Armed Forces.First launched in 2024, the Democracy Cup aims to use football to promote civic education and national unity. The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin, has been instrumental in this initiative, recognizing the sport's potential in enhancing understanding of Ghana's democratic system. The match venue has been relocated to the University of Ghana Stadium for better facilities and security.
