First witness testifies in Rupiah’s corruption case

TRIAL in a case where former President Rupiah Banda is charged with abuse of authority of office yesterday commenced after the Magistrates’ Court refused to refer his case to the High Court.

The first prosecution witness Derrick Kasonka, 44 testified that he conducted a search at former energy minister Kenneth Konga’s house on plot E50 Sable Road in Kabulonga and seized some documents, among them a request for a 45,000 barrels per day term crude oil purchase contract and proposal for solid minerals trade.

Banda is charged with abuse of authority of office contrary to section 99 (1) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
