Sunyani: The Sunyani Zongo community is experiencing brisk business, as Muslims celebrate the 2025 'Maulud', an annual festival of the Tijani Islamic sect. Since Thursday, August 21, buying and selling of Islamic clothing and paraphernalia have peaked at the Zongo community, attracting traders from across the country.
According to Ghana News Agency, some traders have traveled from neighboring countries like Senegal, Cote D'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso to cash in. They are selling items ranging from clothing, footwear, jewelry, body perfumes, and creams to other branded Islamic cosmetics products. Celebrated mostly in August each year, 'Maulud' allows Muslims to remember, reflect, and propagate the ideals of Prophet Muhammad, their religious leader.
During a visit, a market survey by the agency noticed that traders had flooded both sides of the Sunyani Zongo One-way and the Sunyani Central Business enclave, selling all kinds of items. In interviews, some traders mentioned that they always sell Islamic items at reduced prices during such occasions.
Zeinab Fuseni, a trader from the Ashanti Region, said sales have been good, with more buyers opting for the 'Hijab and Abaya dress'. Hajia Asana, another trader from Accra, praised the hospitality of the Sunyani people and expressed excitement about higher sales this year. Baba Ali, a dealer in 'Jalabya' and sandals, expressed appreciation to the Muslim community in Sunyani for their warm reception.
Some shoppers appreciated the reduced cost of items, making them more affordable for the ordinary Muslim. Mr. Isha Yakubu, one of the buyers, described this year's celebration as exceptional, saying it has boosted economic activities in the Zongo community.
Besides spiritual development, Sheikh Issah Abdul Latif, the Bono Regional Secretary of the Tijaniya Muslim Council and the Sunyani Zone Organizer of the celebration, said the festive season also offers an opportunity for the ordinary Muslim to buy Islamic items.
