ECG Refutes Blame for Fire Following Disconnection in Koforidua

Koforidua: The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has denied allegations implicating its staff in causing a fire at a residential facility in Two-Streams, Koforidua, after a disconnection exercise. The company has dismissed the claims as false and urged the public to disregard them.

According to Ghana News Agency, ECG issued a press release signed by Mr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager/External Communications. The release clarified that the customer involved had an outstanding debt of GHS6,519.38 since September 2024, leading to disconnection for non-payment. The statement noted that during a routine exercise called 'Operation Keep the Lights On' on January 24, 2025, ECG staff found the customer had illegally reconnected themselves to the power supply.

The statement detailed that when attempts were made to disconnect the facility, the ECG team faced resistance, with the customer allegedly threatening them with a machete. For their safety, the ECG staff sought police assistance. The disconnection was completed in the presence of police officers by cutting off power from a pole outside the premises. The fire incident reportedly occurred hours later after the ECG team had left the area.

ECG firmly denied any connection between the disconnection and the fire, asserting that cutting power from a pole completely stops electricity supply to the premises and cannot cause a fire. The company highlighted that disconnection is a lawful measure to ensure customers pay for their electricity consumption.

The company reassured the public of its commitment to customer safety and encouraged prompt payment of electricity bills to prevent disconnection or legal action. ECG also warned against illegal connections, labeling them as criminal acts with serious consequences.

The company reiterated its commitment to providing reliable services while ensuring the safety of customers' lives and properties. The public was advised to seek accurate information from ECG or its authorized channels.
