Adidome: Egey Desire, a 28-year-old commercial driver in Adidome, has been arrested by the Central Tongu District Police in collaboration with the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for charging unapproved transport fares. Desire was detained while transporting passengers from Ho to Adidome in his vehicle registered as GT 1578 T.
According to Ghana News Agency, Desire's arrest comes after numerous complaints from commuters who reported that certain drivers in the area were ignoring government directives to reduce transport fares nationwide. Passengers on Desire's vehicle revealed to the agency and security personnel that he charged them GHC 40.00 instead of the approved GHC 35.00 fare.
Authorities note that this operation is part of an ongoing effort to enforce adherence to the revised fare structure, ensuring that transport operators comply with regulatory standards. In a joint statement, the Police and the NIB reiterated their commitment to addressing such violations across the Central Tongu district and beyond.
Currently, Desire is in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon. The public is encouraged to report similar incidents, while drivers and transport union leaders are urged to strictly follow the approved fare guidelines to avoid facing legal consequences.
