Bongo District NHIA Manager Murdered, Body Burnt

Nangodi: Mr Mohammed Seidu Akugri, the Bongo District Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has been murdered, and his body was burnt by unknown shooters.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Salifu Kombat, the Upper East Regional Director of the NHIA, confirmed the incident. It occurred at about 2000 hours on Monday, May 19, 2025, when the deceased was traveling in his private car from Bolgatanga towards Bawku. The body, burnt beyond recognition, is currently at the regional hospital mortuary and will be moved to Bawku for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

An eyewitness reported that the incident took place near a police barracks. Unknown shooters attacked Mr Akugri's vehicle, forcing it to stop. The assailants then shot and killed Mr Akugri and set his car on fire. Despite the proximity to the police barracks, police personnel were unable to intervene.

The motive behind the attack and the identity of the attackers remain unknown, prompting the police to launch an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Mr Mahama Ayariga, Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, condemned the act and extended condolences to the bereaved family. He urged law enforcement agencies to investigate thoroughly and apprehend the perpetrators.

Mr Ayariga also called for calm, highlighting the ongoing efforts led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to resolve the situation in Bawku. He commended the youth of Bawku for their restraint and efforts to maintain peace, emphasizing that significant progress is being made, which should not be derailed.
