BOLGATANGA: Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, the Catholic Bishop of the Narong-Bolgatanga Diocese, has officiated the holy matrimony of 32 couples in a special mass ceremony. The ceremony was part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga.
According to Ghana News Agency, the event drew hundreds of congregants, family members, and well-wishers. The couples, now dubbed the 'Centenary Couples', entered the sacrament of marriage according to the doctrine of the Catholic Church. During the homily, Bishop Agyenta reminded the couples that marriage was a sacred calling, urging them to uphold its principles and values. He emphasized that marriage was not merely a social contract but a sacrament of mission, calling couples to live out the Gospel in their homes and society.
Bishop Agyenta encouraged the couples to model their lives on love, forgiveness, and mutual respect, highlighting that Christian witness in marriage is shown through daily actions. He denounced domestic violence, urging spouses to treat each other with compassion and dignity. He also spoke to couples with children, underscoring the responsibility of raising them in love and faith.
Following the exchange of vows and blessings, the atmosphere shifted from solemn devotion to festive celebration. The couples, their families, and parishioners joined in music, dancing, and thanksgiving on the cathedral grounds. The mass wedding was a key highlight of Sacred Heart Cathedral's ongoing centenary programme, celebrating a century of faith, community, and service in the Diocese.
Several activities, including a pilgrimage, a cultural night, and 40 days of fasting and prayers, have been organized as part of the celebration. On June 27, 2025, the parish will renew the enthronement of the Church to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, awarding over 100 individuals who have contributed to the Church's growth. The centenary celebration, themed 'Celebrating 100 Years of Walking Together as a Family of God,' will climax on June 28, 2025, at the new church building, with proceeds going toward its completion.
