Armed Robbery in Welembelle Claims Life of Sick Woman

Welembelle: A sick woman being transported to the Tumu District Hospital in the Sissala East Municipality died after an armed robbery interrupted her emergency journey. The tragic event occurred in the early hours of Friday when armed robbers halted the vehicle carrying the woman, leading to a delay that ultimately resulted in her death.

According to Ghana News Agency, the attackers detained the passengers for several hours, forcing them at gunpoint to lie down while they ransacked the vehicle. They made away with mobile phones and an undisclosed sum of money. Mr. Basit Mumuni, the driver of the vehicle, recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that the attack happened at Dangi Junction on the Welembelle-Tumu road.

The delay in reaching medical assistance led to the sick woman's death, as she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Tumu Government Hospital. Her remains were returned to Welembelle for burial following Islamic customs. Mr. Jigne Suleman Musah, a Welembelle resident, voiced concern over the incident and urged local security agencies to intensify patrols and seek justice for the perpetrators.

Checks by the GNA at the Tumu Police station revealed that the robbery took place between Kong and Nankpawie at approximately 5:30 am on Friday, July 4, 2025. Three individuals, including a teenage boy, sustained gunshot injuries during the robbery and were transported to the Tumu hospital before being transferred to the Upper West Regional Hospital for further medical care.

Police investigations are ongoing to capture the attackers, although no arrests had been made at the time of the report. ASP Johnson Adusei Poku, Sissala East Municipal Police Commander, vowed to bring the culprits to justice swiftly. He also requested additional police officers to strengthen security efforts in the Municipality.

The Welembelle community is mourning the loss of the woman, a mother of four, and there are increased calls from residents for enhanced protection by the police to curb armed robbery incidents in the Sissala East area.
