Kumasi: The Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (AFSHTS) in Kumasi has successfully qualified for the finals of the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). With an impressive total score of 61 points, the team, represented by Ms. Lois Eshun, Ohene Adjei Talker-Davis, and Israel Hayford, surpassed the required 40 points during the regional qualifiers held in Kumasi.
According to Ghana News Agency, this marks the 11th time AFSHTS has progressed to the national level of the NSMQ competition. Wesley Girls SHS also qualified with 42 points, while Konadu Yiadom Catholic SHS and Aduman SHS did not qualify, scoring 16 and 13 points respectively.
In an interview, Master Talker-Davis expressed joy at qualifying for the national level, attributing their success to divine favor. He remarked that their score exceeded their expectations, as they only aimed to achieve the qualifying score of 40 points. Despite facing resource constraints, Talker-Davis, a 19-year-old form three science student, is optimistic about reaching the quarter-finals with more effort and access to necessary study materials.
Ms. Patience A. Donkor, also a 19-year-old form three science student and AFSHTS NSMQ team member, urged philanthropists, the school's parents association, alumni, and other stakeholders to support their preparation for the national level. She emphasized the need for NSMQ Riddle books, Biological Science books, NSMQ Advance Shortcut books, a clock, additional food, and dedicated teachers.
Mr. Hud K. A Sulaiman, the AFSHTS NSMQ Coordinator, confirmed the scarcity of study materials and resources. He expressed hope that the team would reach the quarter-finals, which would secure their seeding for 2026. Mr. Sulaiman praised the team's hard work and recognized the headmaster and administrative board's support. He called for financial assistance to sponsor the team throughout the competition, as the school continues to provide its support.
