Akatsi: The maternal and child health team, in collaboration with the management of the Akatsi South Municipal Hospital, has organized a series of events to promote breastfeeding awareness within the Municipality. The campaign aims to educate the community on the importance of breastfeeding and its benefits for infants.
According to Ghana News Agency, health experts emphasized that breast milk is the ideal food for infants, highlighting its safety, cleanliness, and the presence of antibodies that protect against common childhood illnesses. Ms. Nancy Dado, a registered midwife at the Akatsi Municipal Hospital, shared insights on the campaign's activities, which included radio and TV education, a float, and workshops such as pregnancy school for women.
Ms. Dado stated, "Breast milk is easily digestible, it protects your babies from infections, has the right amounts of nutrients your baby needs, and increases the mental development of your child. This awareness creation is marked in August every year." She further explained that breastmilk provides essential energy and nutrients for infants during their first months and continues to meet a significant portion of a child's nutritional needs in the subsequent years.
As a one-time Volta Regional Best Midwife, Ms. Dado urged women to adhere to exclusive breastfeeding methods despite any challenges they might face. The campaign this year is themed "Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support System," underscoring the importance of sustained support for breastfeeding practices.
