New york: At the sidelines of UNGA 80, African Heads of State unanimously praised President John Dramani Mahama for his visionary Africa Health Sovereignty Summit that was held in Accra in August. A statement issued by Ghana's Presidency said it was a momentous recognition for Ghana and for Africa's future.According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative had successfully revitalised continent-wide discussions on health self-sufficiency and resilience, setting a new trajectory for the African continent. It said amidst significant funding reductions from international partners, including an estimated £8 billion cut from the United States alone, the leaders recognised the urgent need for Africa to break cycles of dependency. The statement further detailed that at the Committee of Heads of State and Government of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) meeting, which had the Director General of the World Health Organisation in attendance, the leaders agreed to establish regional drug m anufacturing hubs, targeting 60 per cent of Africa's pharmaceutical demand by 2040.Drawing inspiration from India's robust sector, this initiative aims not only to cut drug prices but also to create vital employment opportunities across Africa. President Mahama highlighted Ghana's proactive steps, including the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to expand access, and the 'Big Push' initiative, which would significantly increase investments in the nation's health sector starting next year.
