Accra: Some 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party's flagbearer in the 2028 general elections. The endorsement comes ahead of the NPP's internal elections slated for January 31, 2026, following a stakeholder meeting with Dr. Bawumia in Accra on Monday, June 23, 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, the group of former MMDCEs, who served between 2017 and 2024, stated that after extensive consultations with all aspirants and a thorough assessment of their competence and vision, they were convinced that Dr. Bawumia stood out as the most suitable leader for both the party and the country. They pledged their campaign experience and grassroots networks, noting that their endorsement is not merely symbolic but a strategic and operational commitment. They plan to deploy their experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia's message resonates in every corner of Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia was recognized for his leadership in digital transformation, including initiatives like the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and paperless port systems, which have been credited with improving national efficiency and formalization. The group also praised his inclusive leadership, describing him as accessible and a unifier with strong appeal among the youth, grassroots, and floating voters.
The former MMDCEs argued that Dr. Bawumia's prominence from the 2024 campaign positions the NPP advantageously. They pointed out that electoral data suggests that beginning the campaign with a known candidate like Dr. Bawumia offers the NPP a significant head start. The group hailed him as a leader who balances stability with fresh ideas and committed to backing his bid.
They emphasized their commitment by stating that they are not just endorsing but activating their networks. They plan to mobilize at the grassroots in all 16 regions, leveraging their deep-rooted connections, engaging in door-to-door campaigns, articulating Dr. Bawumia's vision, countering misinformation with facts about his achievements and potential, and resourcing the campaign through fundraising and logistical support. This declaration follows a similar endorsement from 65 out of 88 NPP Members of Parliament last week.
