ZRU Intact – Musunka

ZAMBIA Rugby Union (ZRU) president Martin Musunka has said the union is still intact despite the resignation of two executive committee members.

ZRU vice Owen Mhango and committee member Moono Muleya announced their resignations on Tuesday citing various reasons.

Musunka said in an interview yesterday that the ZRU had capable hands that would fill in the void left by the two members.

“The two members resigned but the union must continue functioning and therefore, we have the positions filled as soon as possible, an announcement will be made at a later stage,” he said.

Muleya, who was also head of competitions, said she decided to quit due to school and family commitments but that she will continue supporting rugby.

Mhango said he had resigned on principle and lamented the failure by his regime to host the flagship Castle 7s international over the last three years adding that it had lowered Zambia’s profile on the continent.

“I was hoping things would get better but I am not feeling it really. Simple issues are not being implemented we can’t keep talking about the same things over and over again. The major thing we are lacking in the ZRU is we lack a lot of resources and everywhere you go to seek sponsorship we always hit a brick wall,” Mhango said.

But the ZRU chief refused to dwell on reasons aanced by Mhango as having prompted his resignation.

“Owen and Moono had indicated their intention to quit the executive committee citing personal reasons and we have respected their decisions. They have made tremendous contributions to the union and we have to thank them for the services they rendered to the development of rugby in the country,” he said.
