ZCTU hails govt on constitution making

ZCTU says the government has laid a good foundation for the constitution-making process through its genuine political will to have a document that will stand the test of time.

In an interview in Kitwe, Zambia Congress of Trade Unions first deputy president Nkole Chishimba said the labour movement was gratified that critical clauses many people believed would enhance the country’s democracy and good governance had been adopted by the national convention.

Chishimba said it calls for political will and genuine patriotism for a government to allow clauses such as the 50 per cent plus one threshold for the winning presidential candidate, running mate clause, among others, to pass at the national convention of the constitution making process.

He said such clauses were unpopular and detested by politicians in the previous government that fought hard to suppress the desires of many Zambians.
