ZAMBIANS URGED TO MAINTAIN HISTORY OF PEACEFUL POLLS AS THEY VOTE THURSDAY

Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has urged Zambians to maintain their record of being an oasis of peace on the continent as the country goes to the polls on Thursday.

Jonathan, who is leading the African Union (AU) Election Observer Mission to monitor the conduct of the polls, told the media here Sunday that Zambia was a shining example of democracy in Africa and it was important that politicians ensured that the record was maintained.

He advised the contesting parties to respect the will of Zambians.

Jonathan described the current political environment as conducive for free and fair elections. He said the mission had noted that political parties were able to undertake their campaign activities without major disruption.
