ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT CONCERNED AT ILLEGAL FELLING OF MUKULA TREES

President Edgar Lungu is disturbed by the indiscriminate felling of the Mukula tree, a prized, protected hardwood species, in the Country, says the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Freedom Sikazwe.

Speaking in Mpulungu District in Northern Province on Wednesday to check on Mukula trees and logs in the Chinakila area, Sikazwe said the President wants the illegal activity to come to stop with immediate effect.

He warned that the illegal harvesting of the Mukula tree in areas such as Chinakila in Mpulungu would not go unpunished.

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs (Interior) Steven Kampyongo has directed officers in his Ministry to carefully scrutinise permits so that action is taken against illegal felling of the trees.

Minister of Defence Davies Chama has also said that the Government will not rest until the local communities benefit from the resource.

Chama said the destruction of Mukula trees in Northern Province was disheartening as some selfish individuals were taking the logs to Tanzania.

Felling of the trees is only permitted for local communities for domestic use but the logs must not be exported.
