ZAMBIAN POWER UTILITY ZESCO NOT FOR SALE, SAYS ENERGY MINISTER

LUSAKA– Zambia’s Minster of Energy Mathew Nkhuwa says no one has expressed any intention of acquiring State-owned power utility ZESCO, which produces 80 per cent of the electricity in the country.

ZESCO still remains one of the biggest State-owned enterorises (SOEs) in the country and has more than 3,000 employees, he said here Sunday.

The government will continue to put in place strategic solutions to enable ZESCO to enhance power generation, added Nkhuwa.

He told ZNBC News that an enterprise such as ZESCO played a big role in the development of the country and that certain decisions could not be made without conclusive consultations.

His remarks come in the wake of social media reports that government plans to sell ZESCO.
