ZAMBIAN POWER UTILITY PROPOSED 75 PCT RAIFF HIKE

LUSAKA, Zambia’s State-owned power utility, ZESCO, has proposed to increase electricity tariffs by an average of 75 per cent.

The power utility proposes that the increase should be in two phases with phase one of 50 per cent increase starting on May 1 and a further 25 percent increase to be implemented in September.

ZESCO has therefore applied to the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to vary the electricity tariffs in accordance with the law, ERB Director of Consumer and Public Affairs Agnes Phiri said in a statement here Monday.

She added that the board would proceed to consider the proposed increases as provided by provisions of the law. Phiri said the ERB would start receiving written submissions from the public within the next 30 days and would also convene a public hearing to consider the submissions by ZESCO.
