ZAMBIAN OPPOSITION APARTY MMD SAYS WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN FORTHCOMING LOCAL GOVT POLLS

LUSAKA– A Zambian opposition party, the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), has declared that it will not participate in the forthcoming local government by-elections.

Its National Secretary, Raphael Nakachinda, said here Monday that the party had opted to continue with party mobilization across the country and added that the by-elections would be “a distraction”.

Nakachinda also said the country is not in a situation of distress which would warrant an intervention from external individuals or organizations.

Speaking to journalists in Lusaka , the MMD National Secretary also said the proposed motion to impeach President Edgar Lungu is bound to fail as it is not anchored on firm constitutional grounds.

Nakachinda went on to say that those advocating the motion are merely politicking as a way of gaining political mileage.

He added that such acts are hindering the country from making progress in creating a platform for engagement among political players.
