ZAMBIAN MINISTER CONDEMNS CAMPAIGN VIOLENCE

LUSAKA– Zambian Home Affairs (Interior) Minister Stephen Kampyongo has condemned reports of violence in the ongoing local government by-election campaigns in some parts of the country.

Kampyongo, who is also the Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament, said here Tuesday that it as unfortunate that there had been reports of pockets of violence during the campaigning and he appealed to the Zambia police to be vigilant and ensure that the perpetrators of violence are brought to book.

The Minister said the electorate should be allowed to make independent decisions on who to vote for without being intimidated and called on all political parties taking part in the April 23 local government bye-elections to avoid any form of violence.

Kampyongo visited Muchinga Province Tuesday to drum up support for the Patriotic Front candidates in the local government bye-elections.

Local media have reported incidents of violence in Mulilansolo in Chinsali district between supporters of different political parties.
