ZAMBIAN GOVT STUDYING CONSTITUTIONAL COURT RULING ON MINISTERS’ PAY

LUSAKA, Zambian Justice Minister Given Lubinda says the government has received a copy of the Constitutional Court judgment ordering Cabinet Ministers who remained in office after the dissolution of Parliament to repay monies which they were paid during that period.

Lubinda said here Sunday that the judgment was being studied before the government comes up with a position on the matter, adding that many issues would have to be considered in arriving at a position over the court ruling.

He noted that the Ministers had rendered a service during the period in question.

However, the government would always respect the separation of powers among three three arms of government while entrenching the independence of the Judiciary, he said.

ubinda says there is no active presidential petition before any court in Zambia on the matter and called on the leadership of the opposition UPND party to explain the basis of their claim that there is still a pending presidential petition in court.

Lubinda said Zambians were free to comment on the matter because the case is no longer before the courts of law.

He added that as the Minister of Justice he feels duty bound to put the record straight in the face of misrepresentation by some UPND leaders.
