ZAMBIAN GOVT SAYS IT’S COMMITTED TO REVAMPING COTTON INDUSTRY VALUE CHAIN

LUSAKA, The Zambian government remains committed to revamping the country’s cotton industry value chain so as to spur economic diversification, says the acting Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, John Mulongoti.

Speaking at the official opening heer Wednesday of a national capacity-building workshop on promoting cotton products in Eastern and Southern Africa, Mulongoti said the government realized the need to diversify the economy by investing in all sectors with potential for value addition.

In this respect, the government was encouraging the cultivation of crops such as cotton, rice, wheat and coffee to earn the country more foreign exchange.

He said the Commerce, Trade and Industry Ministry supported the growth of the cotton sector through the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) value-chain cluster programme.
