ZAMBIAN GOVT INVITES LOCAL, FOREIGN OBSERVERS FOR AUG 11 POLLS

Zambian President Edgar Lungu says the government has invited local and international election observer missions to observe the country’s general election scheduled for Aug 11.

The Head of State said Monday that a number of observer missions had accepted to invitation observe the upcoming elections.

Notable among those which had confirmed are the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the European Union (EU) and the Commonwealth, together with some non-governmental organizations (NGOs), faith-based organizations, inter-governmental organizations.

The president said it was important to note that the government valued the presence of election observer missions during national elections because they provided legitimacy to the electoral and democratic processes.

President Lungu said he appreciated all countries which were sending missions to observe the Zambian general election.

The president said the government was making important strides and that it had tried to create a conducive environment for elections as observed with the fair coverage of election campaigns of different political parties in the media.
