Zambian government repossess Colum Mine from Chinese

Maamba Colum mineGovernment has with immediate effect repossessed the Maamba Colum Coal Mine in Sinazongwe district in Southern Province.
Mines Minister, Yamfwa Mukanga, told a briefing in Lusaka today that the decision has been taken after the Chinese owned company failed to address the environmental concerns.
The Minister said the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mine-ZCCM-Investment Holdings will take over the company until a new investor is found.
He said the mine has failed to address the challenges even after government gave them a 60 day period to work on the concerns.
Mr. Mukanga also accused the Chinese company of failing to pay dividend to government.
He has meanwhile assured the workers that no one will lose their employment during this process.
