ZAMBIAN AGRICULTURE MINISTER SEES NEED TO INVEST IN IRRIGATION TO BOOST FRUIT, VEGE PRODUCTION

LUSAKA — Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture, Dora Siliya, says there is a need to invest in irrigation facilities in order to boost the production of fruits and vegetables in the country.

The cultivation of fruits and vegetables has a potential to create employment opportunities, especially for the youth interested to venture in the agriculture sector, she said here Thursday.

The Minister said this when the president of the Italian MACFRUT company, Renzo Piraccin, called on her at the Ministry of Agriculture.

Piraccin said Zambia had a huge potential to be one of the major fruit and vegetable exporting countries because of the favourable weather and climatic conditions the country enjoys.

He added that his firm was working on setting up fruit and vegetable farms in Zambia using high technology.
