Zambia: RB to Attend U.S Democratic Convention in Penn State

Fourth Republican president Rupiah Banda has left the country to attend the Democratic National Convention at which Hillary Clinton will be confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate.

President Banda left the country for Pennsylvania, USA in the company of his administrative assistant Mikatazo Wakumelo yesterday.

Widely respected for peacefully handing over power when he lost the presidential election to late Patriotic Front’s Michael Sata in 2011, President Banda is a high profile invitee to the DNC.

The convention will start on Monday July 26 and runs through to July 28. President Banda’s deputy administrative assistant Chibeza Mfune confirmed the development in a statement.

“Mr. Banda has been invited to the International Leaders Forum by the President of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) on behalf of the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC).

“The former President will give a lecture at a Public Forum on elections in Southern Africa with emphasis on Zambia,” he states.

President Banda has also overseen elections in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho and Kenya since leaving office.
