Zambia played out a 1 – 1 draw against Tanzania in their opening group match of the GOtv Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup played on a muddy pitch at Machakos Stadium on Thursday.

The condition of the pitch made it difficult for both teams to play smooth flowing football but that did not deter Ronald Kampamba from opening the scoring in the 41st minute as he headed home Felix Katongo’s cross from close range.

Zambia’s lead was cancelled in the 48th minute when Morad Said Hussain put the ball beyond Toaster Nsabata with a powerful free-header from a corner kick.

Zambia coach Patrice Beaumelle said playing the Cecafa championship was always difficult adding that the condition of the pitch did not make it easy.

“It is always tough to play the Cecafa; we will see what happens after three game. We have to recover because this pitch was demanding, we need a lot of massage. We have to prepare ourselves for the next game against Burundi; they won, they have three points, they are leading the group. We have to beat them to move on,” sad Beaumelle

Tanzania coach Kim Poulsen said the response from his team in the second half was positive as they pushed Zambia and eventually equalised.

The result left Zambia and Tanzania tied in second place on one point following Burundi’s 3-0 win over Somalia in the early kick-off played at the same venue.

Zambia’s next match will be played on Sunday against Burundi at Nyayo Stadium with a kick off time of 15:00 CAT
