Zambia: Farewell – Go Well Comrade Request Muntanga

Former United Party for National Development Kalomo Member of Parliament Request Muntanga has been deservedly accorded a national funeral by President Edgar Lungu.

Not surprising considering President Lungu as a member of the front bench had a test of Muntanga’s usually unsettling questions that were it not for a well-read mind may have been easily rubbished as time wasting.

But many in parliament learnt to sit up when Muntanga in league usually with Monze Central’s Jack Mwiimbu and Garry Nkombo of Mazabuka raised his hands on points or orders or points of clarification.

Very easy to say nice things about people when they are dead but Muntanga was one parliamentarian who left a footprint in parliament.

Long before he was a Member of Parliament many will remember his rise to the limelight in the road to parliament debates when he elucidate informatively on matters of agriculture alongside another personality who breathed agriculture Ben Kapita, better known from his Lima Party days.

On matters for agriculture Muntanga never let anything escape his attention and maybe records from the Hansard will better cement his legacy from there.

Lest someone forgets Muntanga’s Kalomo, Given Lubinda (Kabwata) and then Livingstone Central’s Sakwiba Sikota were the pioneers of the constituency offices. For the record the three constituencies pioneered this project which has become part of the parliamentary fabric on a national scale.

Then Vice President Dr Guy Scott loved to pick him out in pelting missiles toward government during the Vice President’s Question Time on Fridays.

It was not all plain sailing as his passion sometimes got out of hand with the Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini having to throw him out of the house for occasional un-parliamentary behaviour.

And of course he was not the best ambassadors of dressing and somehow even for his big frame his communist style suits looked a bit too over-sized. But of course with a smart brain he could get away with it.

Many will also remember that one moment when the UPND Members of Parliament staged a protest within parliament and Mandevu Member of Parliament Jean Kapata infamously uttered these words: “Chimoneni

ukubipa pamenso, kuti nachitolokela pamukoshi nchinyele namasushi” loosely translated as (Look at his ugly face, I can jump on his neck and fart all over him.” Not exactly an honourable thing to say but

that is how charged it gets in parliament.

For now we say, go well Muntanga, you ran your race!
