ZAMBIA EXPELS AMBASSADOR OF CUBA

LUSAKA– The Zambian government has expelled the Cuban Ambassador to Zambia, Nelson Pages, “for conductlikely to jeopardize relations between Zambia and Cuba”, says presidential press aide Amos Chanda.

He added Sunday that the government had since directed the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to write the Cuban government to recall its ambassador.

Chanda stressed that diplomats are not allowed to engage in partisan politics and support the opposition while there is a sitting government.

He said the conduct exhibited by Ambassador Pages of attending the launch of a political party and subsequently pledging his support for the party not only does not sit well with the Zambian government but is also a breach of diplomatic guidelines.

Ambassador Pages on Saturday attended the launch of the newly formed Socialist Party of Zambia by Fred M’membe, a former editor-in-chief of Post Newspapers, which is in liquidation.
