Voting underway in Mansa

Voting is underway in Mansa constituency in Luapula province. The poll opened this morning at 6am and is expected to close at 6pm this evening.

Mansa has 88, 943 registered voters for a population of 228,392, according to the 2010 population census. As a trend few registered voters take part especially during by-elections.

The run-up to this by-election has so far been peaceful. Five political parties are taking part though the three main parties – PF, UPND and MMD have expressed confidence of scooping the seat.

PF is fielding Dr Chitalu Chilufya, MMD has Malama Kapolyo while UPND has Rosemary Mwiche, the only female in the race. Other taking part are UNIP whose candidate is Charles Mwewa and FDD’s Alfred Mwape.

Counting of results will start immediately after closing but final results will only be announced Saturday morning.

The Mansa seat fell vacant following the demise of Kennedy Sakeni who was Member of Parliament and Information Minister. It is the first by-election to be held in the ruling party – PF’s stronghold.
