UPND Resolves Clash of Candidates in Solwezi Central Nomination

Clashes in the opposition United Party for National Development, UPND, emerged in the filing of nominations for the Solwezi Central parliamentary by-election set for September 11 when two candidates pitched up for nominations.
Watson Lumba and Dawson Kafwaya appeared at the nominations centre both representing the opposition party but were turned away to resolve their issues. The matter was resolved 30 minutes before close of nominations.
Kafwaya, a financial analyst and local businessman, successfully filed in his nominations along side MMD’s Lucky Mulusa.
UNIP’s Mary Katiki and PF’s Newton Malwa also filed in their nomination papers before Returning Officer Serah Lunda.
PF candidate Newton Malwa, successfully filed in his nomination papers at the Civic Centre at about midday arriving in the company of a good number of party members.
UNIP, Mary Katiki aged 44, was the first to file in the nominations as early as 09:45 but Elias Chipimo’s National Restoration Party NAREP did not show up for the nominations for unknown reasons.
NAREP was expected to file in first ahead of other political parties but did not show up to 15:00hrs the closing time of filing in nomination papers.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has set 11th September, 2014 as the date for polls in the Solwezi Central Parliamentary by-election which was caused by the nullification of the seat held by Mulusa.
