UNZA Students clash with Riot Police as they attempt to match to State House

University of Zambia –UNZA- Students have clashed with Riot Police after they attempted to match to State House to seek audience with President Michael Sata.

And Police arrested some students during the protests match today.

A huge group of students that mobilized by mid-morning matched on Great East Road heading towards Arcades Shopping Mall singing and chanting anti-ruling PF songs. The students were head singing the hit political song – BUFI. But alert Riot Police prevented the students from going ahead with their protest match.

After some resistance the police fired teargas canisters at the students. Some Students were arrested during the riot and have since been remanded at Lusaka Central Station. But UNZASU leaders are seeking to have the students released.

The students tried to retaliate but later retreated to the Campus. The situation has remained tense at the country’s highest learning institution following protests against the removal of subsidies in fuel and maize.

Meanwhile the UNZA students vowed to continue with protests to press the ruling Patriotic Front government to rescind its decision of removing subsidies in fuel and maize.

University of Zambia Student Union-UNZASU Secretary General Mwauluka Shishekano made the announcement when he featured on UNZA Radio this Friday morning, May 17, 2013.

Mwauluka said students will gather at Mock Square by this morning in readiness for the protest. The UNZA students have condemned government after it announced the scrapping off of the maize subsides. They are saying the decision with the removal of fuel subsidy will have a negative impact on the poor Zambians.

In Kitwe, Students at Copperbelt University have staged a class boycott in protest against government’s decision to remove subsidies on fuel and maize. A check by Zambian Eye this morning found students hanging around campus while Riot Police were seen near the University. The CBU Students had announced that they will join their Lusaka counterparts in protests to push government to rescind decision to remove subsidies.

UNZA students have been moving from one media organization to another giving statement against government decisions to scrap off the subsidy. Last evening the Students fought running battles with the Police when they tried to matched to the cities’ Shopping Malls – Arcades and Manda Hill.
