Stray elephants terrorise villagers

Stray elephants from Nyaminga Game Management Area are reported to be terrorising villagers and destroying empty food granaries in Chief Kazembe’s area in  Lundazi  district.

Kazembe Ward Councillor Reuben Zimba disclosed this to ZANIS in Lundazi district yesterday. He said this has created fear in most local villagers of being killed by stray elephants.

The civic leader named Chibeza, Chalwe, Chimaliro, Kapenda, Kondola, Wadobola, Chilonga, Zokwe, Katopeka, Muyope and Chawama as the most affected villages which need immediate attention.

Zimba said that despite reporting the matter to Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to send officers to control stray elephants, officers that have been there have failed to control them because stray elephants have mostly outnumbered them.

He further disclosed that the elephants are also destroying mango trees as they eat small mango fruits.

The councillor has since appealed to ZAWA in Chipata to send more officers to beef up staff restore peace  and order as most villagers have even stopped working in their vegetables gardens for fear of being killed by the beasts.

But when contacted for comment, ZAWA Eastern Province Luangwa Area Management Unit [ELAMU] Acting Manager, Webster Katele denied receiving any report of elephants terrorizing villagers in Chief Kazembe’s area located in the valley area of Lundazi district.
