Sports Round Up

By Sanford Chiwone
What a sporting period we’ve had over the last couple of days, let us do a quick recap…
In tennis, world number one Novak Djokovic won the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters on Sunday as he prevented “the king of clay” Raphael Nadal from making it nine consecutive Monte Carlo titles.
Nadal, unbeaten in 46 previous matches at the tournament, was beaten 6-2 7-6 (7-1) by the world number one in one hour and 53 minutes.
Djokovic, showing no signs of the ankle injury that troubled him during the early rounds, was superb from the outset of the decider.
What can we say? Bring on Roland Garros.
Further in Tennis, new rankings were released. Roger
Federer has moved up to second in the ATP ranking at the expense of Andy Murray, while Novak Djokovic has retained top spot.
Federer, who decided to skip last week’s Monte Carlo Masters, replaces Murray after the Briton crashed out of the ATP 1000 event in the third round to Stanislas Wawrinka.
Australian Open champion Djokovic consolidated his place at number one after ending Rafael Nadal’s eight-year undefeated run in Monte Carlo with a 6-2 7-6 (7-1) win over the Spaniard in
Sunday’s final. Federer has 8,670 points, 10 more than Murray.
Spanish pair David Ferrer and Nadal are fourth and fifth respectively, with Thomas Berdych, Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Janko Tipsarevic making up the restof the top 10.

In formular one, reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel extended his lead at the top of the driver’s championship to 10 points with his second race win of the season in the Bahrain race on Sunday. He was 9.1 seconds ahead of Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen whose team-mate
Romain Grosjean was third in the same podium finish as last year’s race.
The 4th consecutive title for Vettel looks evermore a possibility as well as a probability.

In soccer, and the local game in particular, Nkana beat Konkola Mine Police to continue with their good start to the season. The league leaders and pace-setters have set off to a flying start and early as it is in the campaign you might begin to liken them to that very long overdue 12th domestic title.
Other games saw Zesco United sharing the spoils with Power Dynamos when they played to a 1-1 draw at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium.
On Sunday, the defending champions Zanaco were trounced 4-0 at the hands of visitors Green Buffaloes.
