Sporadic Gunfire in Malian City of Timbuktu

Sporadic shooting continues in the Malian city of Timbuktu, where government troops are conducting house-to-house searches for Islamist militant fighters.

The militants — linked to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb — infiltrated the Saharan city Saturday night in the chaos that followed a suicide bombing at a military checkpoint.

At least 11 militants have been killed in the latest fighting in Timbuktu, in which French fighter jets provided aircover for Malian troops.
