Solwezi Prison too congested, built for 60 Prisoners but hosts 324

The Solwezi Central Prisons is accommodating 324 prisons instead of the 60 the prison was meant for.

Officer in-Charge Changala Silwamba said the Prison which was established in 1952 only for 62 inmates but now the number has reached 324 without any improvement of the infrastructure.

He was speaking when the Provincial Permanent Secretary visited the Central Prison to familiarize himself with the challenges being faced.

Mr Silwamba disclosed that among the challenges being faced included congestion in the cells, inadequate water supply, Transport as they only have one vehicle and lack of staff at the Central Prison.

Meanwhile the Provincial Permanent Secretary said the PF government has embarked on ambitious programs to improve the welfare of all Zambians and Prisoner are not an exceptional.

“We have so far paid 65000 kwacha to North Western Water and supply company to ensure erratic water supply becomes a thing of the past” Mr. Seyuba said.

The Provincial Permanent Secretary stated that government will look into the challenges and ensure they are taken care off

He has however encouraged juveniles to Transform before they leave the Prisons.
