Shoprite launches inaugural giant pumpkin contest

SHOPRITE Zambia has imported into the country a giant pumpkin weighing 240kg that is intended to be used as an inspiration to Zambian farmers to participate in the annual giant pumpkin growing competition.

Shoprite sponsors a competition in South Africa where the supermarket provides the giant pumpkin seed (that are imported from North America) and the need-to- know-techniques on how to grow the pumpkin to the substantial size.

Recently, a farmer in the Western Cape of South Africa managed to grow one of the heaviest pumpkins in an annual giant pumpkin growing competition.

The pumpkin weighed in at an unbelievable 417kg and is a new record for the South African competition.

According to a statement issued yesterday, Shoprite Zambia has imported into the country one of the pumpkins grown from South Africa into its Manda Hill store.

“This is in order to drum up excitement and set the bar for the inaugural competition in Zambia.
