Sata Delays Medical Travel

President Michael Sata was unable to make a quietly planned trip to South Africa last night due to his health condition, a State House source says, and has postponed travel to a future date.

The trip, which was originally planned to avoid public attention, entailed taking the presidential chopper to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and then traveling onward to Johannesburg by private charter.

The purpose of the trip was to receive treatment for a worsening throat cancer condition, and for the doctors to give a final assessment of their estimation of how much time Sata has left to appoint his successor, the source says.

The president is obligated to perform the opening ceremony of parliament by mid-September, and if he is physically unable to do so, he will have to appoint an Acting President and step down.
