Sab’s Eye: Long Awaited Hologram

When news broke last week that the long awaited hologram had finally come out, the general public was left to wonder what in heaven a hologram is. In the simplest terms, a hologram is a gadget that helps authenticate all artistic works and ensures that the public easily identifies original CDs, DVDs, VCDs, etc, from the fake ones.
In other words, a hologram is a gigantic step in the fight against piracy hence it being such great news. Being a country that is hit by so much piracy, Zambian artists have for a long time urged government to introduce the hologram so that they can get as much as possible from their works instead of most of their hard work being enjoyed by the piraters.
These produce enmass, distribute in all corners of the country and can be found on every street and traffic lights openly selling this stolen intellectual property to the public. Most artists, therefore, welcomed this move and it will definitely go a long way in the fight against piracy and ultimately more money in the pockets of the artists.
However, this great news was overshadowed by the politics that played out between the Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary, Mr. Amos Malupenga and the Zambia Association of Musicians’ chairperson Maiko Zulu, who for some reason fell out over the launch of the hologram.
This led to Maiko Zulu not attending the launch at Pamodzi Hotel where a lot of stakeholders had been invited. Notably absent from the launch, conversely, were the very stakeholders the hologram is made for like other arts associations, apart from ZAM.
On TV, the P.S explained to his audience that Maiko had been invited but did not show up and other media reported him as having called Maiko a disgrace to the musicians. After that, a clip of Maiko was shown on TV where he explained that the notice was given to him late and he could not ‘fly’ from his house to Pamodzi Hotel in such heavy Lusaka traffic.
While the drama was exciting and just what show bizz is made of, the whole spectacle overshadowed the joy and excitement of finally having something that we have so long advocated and waited for. I will talk to Maiko and the P.S to get an insight of the drama and something tells me there is definitely more to it than what even met Sab’s eye. See you next week!
