Riots rock Serenje, two more Schools closed

Government has closed two other schools in Serenje District of Central over pupils’ riots.

Education Minister John Phiri said Justine Mukondo and Ibolelo have been closed after pupils rioted at the school causing damages to school property.

This follows another riot at Ibollelo High School in Serenje in the early hours on Tuesday. The riot at Ibolelo Secondary School was caused after protest against school authorities’ alleged failure to purchase a school bus despite having received  contributed funds.

Dr. Phiri said in Kabwe on Tuesday July 23, 2013 that the two schools including Serenje Boys have been closed immediately.

The Minister has also ordered the transfer of school authority with immediate effects. He has also rescinded early decison to allow Grade 12 pupils at Serenje Boys open the school on 12 August saying they will now open in September on the normal school calendar.

Dr. Phiri has since warned the school pupils around the country that the country will not spare any other pupils engaged in riotous behaviour.

Pupils at Serenje Boys in the early hours of Sunday July 21 rioted causing serious damage to the school and this was also followed by pupils at Justine Mukondo late on Sunday.

23 pupils at Justin Mukando Secondary School have since been arrested.
