Residents turn cemetery into block-making grounds

Some residents in Choma are making blocks from a cemetery, a situation that has raised concerns from members of the public in the provincial capital of Southern province.

Members of the public who went to check on the graves of their beloved ones at Barn Cemetery found that some people making blocks within the cemetery get soils which they use to make blocks for sale.

The Local authorities have condemned the act describing it as nuisance and called on those making blocks to stop or the law will visit them. One of the people making blocks found at the cemetery told Zambian News Information Services that it is their source of livelihood.

A cemetery in the African culture is normally regarded as sacred place where people do not just visit anyhow but with the scarcity of land the situation is starting to change.
