The Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM)  has expressed happiness at the campaign which it launched to consult Zambians on the possibility of persuading former President Rupiah Banda to contest the 2016 general elections under a United opposition.

ZDDM President Edwin Sakala claims that ordinary people are happy with the idea while a section of intellectuals wants a young person as President. He stated that following this mixed views from the public his party has since started collecting signatures from people who wants Rupiah Banda to stand for the elections.

Under his ideal plan, Sakala wants the former President to contest the presidency while advocating for certain positions to be allocated to all opposition political parties. He explained that the government should have two Vice Presidents one from MMD the other from UPND while father Frank Bwalya be given Ministry of Information while all other parties share other ministries.

Sakala claims that the opposition is fragmented and risks loosing the election to the ruling Patriotic Front starting that it can however dislodge it if the opposition work in unite.

He stated that his decision is not aimed at undermining other political parties but believes Rupiah Banda can play a big role in uniting the opposition for the benefit of the country. He added that the country needs a fatherly leader to unit all citizens regardless of the political affiliation.

Sakala said the country cannot afford the luxury of a fragmented opposition or a government with criminals running the criminal justice system controlling flow of information.
