Race is on, ECZ sets September 26 for Petauke, Malambo and Mulobezi by-elections

After the High Court ruling on Tuesday, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has now announced that the by-elections in Petauke Central, Mulobezi and Malambo shall be held on Thursday September 26, 2013.

In a press statement today, September 4, 2013, ECZ Public Relations Manager Cris Akufuna said the file-in of nominations shall take place on Tuesday, September 10, and the barred candidates – Dora Siliya, Maxwell Mwale and Hastings Sililo shall be allowed to file-in.

Akufuna explains that the official campaigns for the three by-elections shall commence immediately after the filing-in of nominations and will go upto 6pm on Wednesday of September 25, 2013.

High Court Judge Mungeni Mulenga dismissed the decision by ECZ to stop Siliya, Mwale and Sililo from recontesting their nullified seat following an infamous Press Statement from the Judiciary.

Judge Mulenga ruled that there was no basis to bar the trio from filing nominations in the by-elections in the absence of a report from the High Court to the ECZ in accordance with the Electoral Act.

The trio lost their seats after the Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s decision to nullify their seats after it was established they engaged in electoral malpractices in the 2011 election campaigns.
