Police, ZAF conduct disaster simulation exercise in L/stone

PANIC momentarily gripped Livingstone residents yesterday when a combined team of police, ZAF and Medical Air Rescue conducted a disaster simulation exercise in the main business centre.

The simulation exercise, which lasted nearly an hour, began after 10AM and sent many residents speculating that there had been a plane crash at the Victoria Falls as police cars, motorcycles, ZAF and MARS ambulances raced to and from the Falls area.

Several minutes later, the Livingstone Fire Brigade joined in the exercise, further increasing the suspicion.

A medical officer speaking on condition of anonymity said the joint rescue operation was meant to assess the time taken to evacuate possible casualties from designated UNWTO general assembly venues to the Livingstone General Hospital.
